A Grassroots Academician
Lu Yonggen, the former president of South China Agricultural University, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a renowned crop geneticist in China, was the first person among ten inspirational role models to be honored at the 2017 Touching China awards ceremony announced by China Central Television on March 1, 2018.
Born in Hong Kong in 1930, Lu Yonggen began to develop a national consciousness due to the brutality of the War of Resistance against Japan. He gradually became a staunch revolutionary who spent his life studying, loving, and working for agriculture. He devoted himself entirely to agricultural science and education for his motherland, where he was needed.
While Lu's life was not materially rich, as a principal and academician, he was not particular about what he wore or ate. His simple bedding, four white walls, and furnishings in his home could make one feel as though they were transported back to the last century. However, when it comes to academic contributions, Lu should be considered very "rich." In recent years, he led the team to select and breed 33 new crop varieties. The cumulative promotion area in South China was more than 10 million mu, and the new output value exceeded 1.5 billion yuan. In terms of the value of life, Lu Yonggen undoubtedly left a priceless wealth. At the age of 19, he resolutely gave up the luxurious and comfortable life in Hong Kong and returned to the destitute mainland of China at that time. At the age of 53, he served as the president of South China Agricultural University, breaking the dilemma faced by talents and providing young people with broad space for development. At the age of 87, he donated all the 8.8 million yuan he had saved in his life to the educational enterprise...
On the flyleaf of Lu Yonggen's notebook were written a few words: "Work a little more, take a little less, back a little harder, talk a little louder." These four "a little" are not grandiose words but a reflection of the noble personality of an outstanding member of the Communist Party. Lu Yonggen was thrifty and indifferent to fame and wealth all his life. He decided to donate his body to medical research free of charge after his death. He practiced the oath of "dedicating everything to the Party and the motherland" with exemplary actions, showing the nobility of a member of the Communist Party. He was posthumously awarded the title of "National Outstanding Member of the Communist Party."
