The Jiao Family Tradition

Jiao Yulu (1922-1964) was born in Beigu village, Boshan county, Shandong Province. He was a model official and a revolutionary martyr. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1946 and received military training in the Bohai region in 1947 before going south with the army. In 1950, he was appointed as the deputy secretary and district head of the Daying District Committee in Weishi County, Henan Province. In 1962, he was transferred to be the secretary of the Lankao County Committee in Henan Province. During his tenure in Lankao, Jiao Yulu demonstrated the spirit of "caring for the people, working hard, seeking truth from facts, overcoming difficulties, and selfless dedication", which later became known as the "Jiao Yulu spirit" by the Chinese people.

His quilt had been used for over 10 years with patches inside and out so that even a gentle tug would create a hole. He had been wearing the same thin cotton-padded jacket for many years. One winter, when other officials saw that he was always on the go, and his clothes were too thin for the cold weather, they decided to give him about three pounds of cotton. When he heard about this, he declined, saying “it was not appropriate.” He explained to his wife “Lankao was a disaster-stricken area and people there were struggling to make ends meet. We cannot take advantage of public resources. And we should solve our own difficulties by practising thrift.”

He led his life, pinching and scraping, and also demanded the same of his family. When his eldest daughter Jiao Shoufeng was in her teens, she wore the same padded jacket as she wore at 9 years old, which had several patches, and the sleeves had been lengthened several times. Her classmates laughed at her and said, "It's a shame for the daughter of the top official in the county to wear this kind of clothes." Jiao Yulu said to his daughter, “I just can’t believe that you’ve paid so much attention to clothing at such a young age. What a shame! If you don't study hard and observe discipline, it's really a shame! The clothes are old and torn, you can wash them clean and fix them!" Taught by her father, she wore her old cotton-padded jacket for another two winters, until she couldn't wear it anymore, then gave it to her little sister. When Jiao Yulu died, his family had elderly parents and underage children. A family of nine people all relied on his wife Xu Junya's monthly salary of just more than 50 yuan and a pension of 13 yuan to survive. A piece of clothing was always worn by the eldest child and then the younger child; A workbook would only be renewed until both the front and back sides were used up; A pencil was to be used all the time until you could not hold it anymore, then a small cylinder of iron sheet would be used to cover it. It will not be thrown away until it was really useless in the end.

In daily life, Jiao Yulu is very strict with his wife and children, requiring them not to engage in special treatment at any time. Once when he saw his wife fetch a pot of boiling water from the canteen of the county party committee, he immediately criticized his wife: "You took this pot of boiling water for your own convenience, but you are the wife of the secretary of the county party committee, and you cannot take the lead in disrupting the order of the office". When Jiao Yulu knew that his son Jiao Guoqing watched a play for free, he was very angry and severely disciplined him, and then took Jiao Guoqing to the theater the next day to admit his mistake and made up for the theater ticket money. When Jiao Yulu was dying, he told his wife: "After I die, you will have a hard time. But no matter how hard your life is, don't reach out to the Party for subsidies and relief. You have to educate the children to be the successors of the red revolution."

In her subsequent life, his wife Xu Junya also always adhered to her husband's legacy and followed the family tradition of the Jiao family. When Jiao Yulu died, his second son Jiao Yuejin was six years old. In Jiao Yuejin's memory, his mother talked little, but the commonest words she said to him were "Don't engage in special treatment and never forget that you are Jiao Yulu's son." The last words Jiao Yulu left to his family before his death were "I have nothing to leave for you..." What he left to his family were warm and beautiful memories and thoughts, firm faith and noble character, and the great Jiao family tradition of hard work and plain living. These are the most precious treasures and the most beautiful inheritance.
